UGC Assistant Professor Eligibility Criteria 2023 (NEW): The University Grants Commission (UGC) has revised the eligibility criteria for Assistant Professors in higher education institutions.

According to the UGC Gazette notification, the eligibility criteria for appointment as Assistant Professor, in the form of a Ph.D. qualification, will be optional from 1st July 2023. For direct recruitment to the position of Assistant Professor in all higher education institutions, NET, SET, or SLET will be the minimum eligibility criteria. The UGC has made this revision to increase the number of eligible candidates for the Assistant Professor position and to make the recruitment process more competitive. UGC Chairman, Mr. Jagdish Kumar, has stated that starting from 1st July 2023, NET, SET, or SLET qualifications will be mandatory for direct recruitment of Assistant Professors in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

As mentioned in the UGC Gazette, it states, “For direct recruitment to the position of Assistant Professor in all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), NET, SET, or SLET will be the minimum eligibility criteria.” This means that candidates applying for Assistant Professor positions after July 2023 will be required to fulfill only the revised criteria.

Assistant Professor Appointment: Ph.D. Degree Optional, Not Mandatory

Old Rule – Prior to this, as per the UGC Regulations, 2018, a Ph.D. degree was mandatory qualification for direct recruitment to the position of Assistant Professor in universities.

New Rule – Now, as per the University Grants Commission (Second Amendment) Regulations, 2023, it has been directed that a Ph.D. degree is an optional qualification for recruitment to the position of Assistant Professor. This new rule came into effect on 1st July 2023. Candidates without a Ph.D. degree can also apply for Assistant Professor recruitment.

Is the NET exam mandatory for the Assistant Professor position?

If you aspire to become an Assistant Professor or Lecturer in India, it is mandatory to pass the NET exam (UGC NET/CSIR NET/ICAR NET). According to the UGC regulations, only the NET exam is the gateway to becoming an Assistant Professor. Ph.D. candidates are not exempt from appearing in the UGC NET.

As per the UGC norms, the minimum eligibility criteria for Assistant Professor, JRF, or equivalent positions in UGC-approved universities are as follows: SET, SLET, NET certificate, and a Master’s degree. For the recruitment of teachers, a minimum of 55% marks in post-graduation or a Ph.D. degree is required.

UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2023: Guidelines for Assistant Professor Position

The educational eligibility criteria for UGC NET are as follows:

Category Educational Qualification
General, EWS Candidates should have a minimum of 55% marks in their Master’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university or institution accredited by UGC.
OBC, SC, ST, PWD, Third Gender The candidate must have obtained at least 50% marks in Master’s degree or equivalent from a University, Institute recognized by UGC.
Note: Candidates who are still pursuing their Master’s degree, or candidates who have appeared in their Master’s degree (final year) examination and whose results have not yet been declared, are also eligible to appear for this examination. or candidates whose qualifying examinations have been delayed. They can also apply for this exam.

 

For SET candidates: Candidates who have passed the State Eligibility Test (SET) recognized by the UGC for Assistant Professor before June 1, 2002, are exempted from appearing in NET, and they are from any University in India OR are eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Professor in the college. For SET held from 1st June 2002 onwards, qualified candidates can apply for the post of Assistant Professor only in the universities or colleges of the states from where they have cleared their SET.
